Common Questions
Everything you need to know about cycling the pine forests and Engure Lake coastal loop
The Engure Lake loop is specifically designed for riders like you—it's completely flat with a 22 km loop that takes most people 2-3 hours at a comfortable pace. We don't rush, and our guides are trained to work with riders who are getting back into cycling after a break.
A proper gravel bike is really what we recommend—the wider tires (40-50mm) make logging roads much more comfortable and safer, especially on rougher sections. You could use a hybrid or mountain bike too, but the riding experience won't be as smooth. We can give you specific tire recommendations in our pre-ride briefing if you're unsure what to upgrade.
Honestly, breaks are built into every route we offer—we stop for water, snacks, and to enjoy the views. Our groups are small (maximum 8 riders) so we move as one unit. Nobody gets left behind.
Wear layers—forest riding means shade and wind, even on warm days. Bring water, snacks, sunscreen, and a basic repair kit. We provide detailed packing lists for every route. A helmet is non-negotiable, and comfortable cycling shorts or padded bibs make longer rides much better.
We use established logging roads that are well-maintained and clearly marked—getting lost isn't a concern because our guides know these routes intimately. Wildlife like deer might cross your path, but they're not aggressive. We follow a safety briefing at the start, and every guide carries a first aid kit and has emergency communication.
May through September is ideal—the forest roads dry out and the weather is most stable. Spring and early summer offer the best light, while autumn brings fewer bugs and beautiful colors. We do ride year-round, but winter conditions on gravel roads require extra caution and specific equipment.
